Mechanical Design & Fabrication Centre

Design. Prototype. Innovate.

About the Centre

The Mechanical Design and Fabrication Centre at Academy of Technology (AOT) is a hub for innovation, rapid prototyping, and hands-on application centre. This Centre aids in development of a product from its ideation, inception to its final form.

Equipped with a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Vertical Milling Machine, 3D printer, and modern design tools, the Centre empowers students to transform concepts into tangible models—preparing them for careers in mechanical design, manufacturing, product development, and research.

Key Focus Areas

  • CAD Modelling using AutoCAD and FreeCAD
  • Drafting for manufacturing and production workflows
  • CNC Machining and Toolpath Programming
  • 3D Printing for rapid prototyping and design validation
  • Material selection and accuracy control in additive manufacturing
  • Product Design from concept to prototype
  • Reverse Engineering of mechanical components and systems
  • Lifecycle exploration: ideation, modelling, fabrication and testing

Student Opportunities

  • Mini-projects on real-world mechanical design challenges
  • Workshops on CAD, CNC operation, and 3D printing
  • Participation in design contests and hardware hackathons

Faculty Involvement

  • Expert mentoring in design and fabrication processes
  • Support for interdisciplinary collaboration

Facilities

1 . CNC Vertical Machining Centre (BFW Agni BMV 45 T20)

  • 3-axis CNC system with ±3 μm machining accuracy
  • Spindle speed up to 6000 rpm with automatic 20-tool changer
  • Powered by Industry-standard FANUC Series Oi-MD software

2 . Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) 3D Printer

  • High build volume with fine layer resolution (0.1–0.4 mm)

3 .  AutoCAD and FreeCAD softwares

Activities

Training to students for product development for participating in various state and national level hackhathons.

Facilitating all departments with product development using state of the art technologies.

Success Stories

Sastriya Desvesh: Innovation in Toy Design

  • Project Title: Sastriya Desvesh – IoT-based Puzzle Game Representing Unity in Diversity through Indian Classical Dance
  • Team Members: Harsita Kedia, Ashutosh Pandey, Amit Majumdar, Ankit Kumar (ME Department, Batch of 2023)
  • Mentor: Dr. Jhumpa De
  • Project Overview: Sastriya Desvesh celebrates the seven classical dance forms of India — Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Kathakali, and Mohiniattam. The game features interactive buttons linked to states and dance forms; correct inputs trigger 3D-printed dolls to rotate and LEDs on an India map to blink, symbolizing cultural unity. Dolls were fabricated using PLA filament through 3D printing technology.
  • Highlight: Selected as a finalist at Toycathon 2021-22, organized by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell to promote indigenous toy innovation inspired by Indian heritage.
